About North West Redwater Partnership

The Sturgeon Refinery is the first refinery built in Canada since the 1980s. The only bitumen refinery designed from the outset with a carbon capture solution, it uses technology to maximize performance and reduce emissions by capturing carbon dioxide. In fall 2013, shovels officially broke ground on the project site. Peak construction saw over 8,500 workers on the project daily, in addition to thousands of jobs in engineering firms and fabrication shops.

The refinery has been producing diesel and other products since December 2017. Phase One of the Sturgeon Refinery is designed to process approximately 79,000 barrels per day of diluted bitumen from Alberta’s oil sands into much higher value products. This includes ultra-low sulphur diesel, vacuum gas oil, diluent, and natural gas liquids.

The refinery is designed for two additional identical phases, creating the opportunity to maximize production of transportation fuels while simultaneously supporting new employment and economic impact.

North West Redwater Partnership (NWR) executes excellence in health, safety and environmental (HSE) performance with a Goal Zero approach to operate safely and responsibly.

The refinery is located 45 km northeast of Edmonton in Sturgeon County. This location offers numerous advantages, including close proximity to major crude oil and diluent pipelines, established infrastructure, and a stable and skilled regional workforce. Further, there are several opportunities for product synergies and downstream petrochemical development with other industrial facilities in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland.

About the Tour

Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at the NWR Sturgeon Refinery, where company experts will share firsthand insights on producing essential transportation fuels safely and responsibly.

About Alberta's Industrial Heartland Association

Alberta’s Industrial Heartland is Canada’s top destination for large-scale industrial investment — from petrochemicals and oil & gas to clean energy, direct air capture, and advanced manufacturing. Ranked among the top two industrial clusters worldwide out of 339, the Heartland combines $50 billion in capital investment, 40+ operating companies, and Canada’s only Designated Industrial Zone to deliver unmatched scale, infrastructure, and ESG leadership. The result: faster timelines, lower risk, and stronger returns for internationally scaled projects.

About the Tour

This exclusive facility tour offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at Alberta’s Industrial Heartland—Canada’s largest hydrocarbon processing region and a globally recognized hub for petrochemical, energy, and low-carbon innovation. Experience firsthand the scale, complexity, and cutting-edge technologies driving the production of fuels, petrochemicals, and next-generation clean energy solutions, while connecting with the leaders shaping the future of Canada’s industrial landscape.

We are committed to making our world more productive, sustainably through our operations and engineering expertise, established infrastructure and strong investment in decarbonization projects and R&D.

About the Tour

Come along for a guided tour of Linde's LNG Liquefaction Facility in Fort Saskatchewan, built in partnership with Alberta ERA. On this tour you see how natural gas is cooled to -190 degC using cryogenic liquid nitrogen, contracting the volume by 600 times, and loaded into trailers for distribution across Western Canada.

Your tour guides will explain how Linde's unique process results in negligible electricity consumption and emissions while producing a product with a lower carbon intensity and cost, on an energy basis, than diesel.

Join us to discover how Linde is leading clean transportation by converting nine of its own fleet trucks to LNG—and how we can help your organization do the same.
